Poor Tony Blair was 'depressed' over Iraq

Tony Blair told Gordon Brown he planned to quit as Prime Minister after sinking into a deep depression after the Iraq invasion, the latest extract of an explosive book on New Labour reveals today.

The former Prime Minister's morale plummeted between late 2003 and spring 2004 as haunting images of suicide bombings and dead soldiers dominated the news headlines. Andrew Rawnsley's book, The End of the Party, claims that Mr Blair confided to friends that he "spaced out" several times during Prime Minister's Questions and frequently woke in the middle of the night with sweat trickling down the back of his neck.

Yet months after telling Mr Brown and John Prescott of his plans to quit in summer 2004, he reneged on the promise after his wife, Cherie, and close friends talked him out of it. Last month Mr Blair told the Chilcot Inquiry into Iraq that he had "not a regret" about waging war against Saddam Hussein – to the anger of the families of British war dead present.

Apple admits to using child labour

At least eleven 15-year-old children were discovered to be working last year in three factories which supply Apple.

The company did not name the offending factories, or say where they were based, but the majority of its goods are assembled in China.

Apple has been repeatedly criticised for using factories that abuse workers and where conditions are poor. Last week, it emerged that 62 workers at a factory that manufactures products for Apple and Nokia had been poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical that can cause muscular degeneration and blur eyesight. Apple has not commented on the problems at the plant, which is run by Wintek, in the Chinese city of Suzhou.

Last year, an employee at Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that is one of Apple's biggest suppliers, committed suicide after being accused of stealing a prototype for the iPhone.

In its report, Apple revealed the sweatshop conditions inside the factories it uses. Apple admitted that at least 55 of the 102 factories that produce its goods were ignoring Apple's rule that staff cannot work more than 60 hours a week.

Liberals and atheists have a higher IQ

Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs. This applied also to sexual exclusivity in men, but not in women. The findings will be published in the March 2010 issue of Social Psychology Quarterly.

The IQ differences, while statistically significant, are not stunning -- on the order of 6 to 11 points -- and the data should not be used to stereotype or make assumptions about people, experts say. But they show how certain patterns of identifying with particular ideologies develop, and how some people's behaviors come to be.

The reasoning is that sexual exclusivity in men, liberalism and atheism all go against what would be expected given humans' evolutionary past. In other words, none of these traits would have benefited our early human ancestors, but higher intelligence may be associated with them.

Latvian 'Robin Hood' hacker leaks bank details to TV

An alleged hacker has been hailed as a latter-day Robin Hood for leaking data about the finances of banks and state-owned firms to Latvian TV.

Using the alias "Neo" - a reference to The Matrix films - the hacker claims he wants to expose those cashing in on the recession in Latvia.

He is slowly passing details of leading Latvian firms via Twitter to the TV station and has its audiences hooked.

Data leaked so far includes pay details of managers from a Latvian bank that received a bail-out.

It reveals that many did not take the salary cuts they promised.

Other data shows that state-owned companies secretly awarded bonuses while publicly asking the government for help.

Ilze Nagla, a TV presenter on the state-owned Latvian TV, told the BBC the hacker has attained cult status for some.

"A lot of people perceive him as a modern, virtual Robin Hood," she told the BBC.

Bully Brown and a universe of double standards

The cabinet secretary, Sir Gus O'Donnell, was tonight under pressure to launch a formal investigation into Gordon Brown's treatment of his staff after an anti-bullying helpline revealed it has received several complaints from people working at No 10.

The National Anti-bullying Helpline charity went public after the business secretary, Lord Mandelson, flatly denied Rawnsley's claims, insisting that Brown was simply "demanding", "emotional, "and had a degree of impatience".

Christine Pratt, the helpline's director, said: "We are not suggesting he is a bully. What we are saying is there are people in his office working directly with him that have issues and concerns, and have contacted our helpline. We believe the present statement put out by Lord Mandelson is a nonsense and non-credible."

Shocking stuff.  But considerably less shocking, when you realise that both David Cameron and Ann Widdecombe were patrons of this organisation.  Less shocking still when you see the grammatical inaccuracies of the 'National Bullying Helpline' website, and consider the fact that anonymous calls had been used for political posturing, the picture slowly starts to come together.   But where is David Cameron in all of this?

Cameron there, calling for an inquiry.  But there's an interesting double standard at work here:

A News of the World reporter ... has been awarded almost £800,000 for unfair dismissal and disability discrimination.

Matt Driscoll, a sports reporter sacked in April 2007 while on long-term sick leave for stress-related depression, was awarded £792,736 by the east London employment tribunal. It is believed to be the highest payout of its kind in the media, and legal costs could take News International's total bill well over the £1m mark.

And who was he sacked by?  Who was discriminating against him?  According to the tribunal:

"The original source of the hostility towards the claimant [Driscoll] was Mr Coulson, the editor; although other senior managers either took their lead from Mr Coulson and continued with his motivation after Mr Coulson's departure; or shared his views themselves. Mr Coulson did not attend the tribunal to explain why he wanted the claimant dismissed."

Coulson resigned from the News of the World, amid embarassment regarding the then royal editor being  jailed for hacking mobile phones.  Coulson's present occupation?

Director of Communications & Planning for David Cameron's Conservative Party.

It's no wonder Catholics grow up battling natural feelings

Catholicism in particular is a religion that is very adept at instilling fear and shame into its followers. It’s this same sense of shame that allowed the abuse of children to flourish within certain parishes. It is also this shame that prevented wives from seeking help when their husbands forced them to have sex. I grew up in a Catholic community and heard many stories of rape within marriage.

When you are brought up Catholic you don’t need to be told directly not to discuss sex, they manage to pass on this belief to followers that the body is sin almost subconsciously.  Sex is only for procreation and anything outside of that is wrong. It is no wonder that so many Catholics grow-up battling against natural feelings.
